Sentencing Act Webinar

Tuesday, August 18, 2026 - 10:00:00 AM until

The Sentencing Act gained Royal Assent in January 2026. It is the biggest reform of the justice system in decades, introducing a presumption of suspended sentences for short custodial terms, extending deferred sentencing periods, and updating the purposes and management of sentences. Clinks has been gathering the views of the sector for the past 2 years and would like to ensure the sector is in a position to engage in the implementation of each element.

Whilst the announcement on 22nd July, advised a review of the implementation of the Progression Model, which will cause a delay to the planned releases starting on 2nd September, other elements of the Sentencing Act are progressing and we would like the sector to be fully prepared as possible.

This session will provide detail about the different elements of how the Act will be implement; what this means for the voluntary sector and how Clinks can provide ongoing support.

Outline of the session:

  • The Context of the Act
  • Phase 1 implementation
  • Phase 2 implementation
  • How this effects the CJS in practice
  • What the Sentencing Act means for the Voluntary Sector
  • What the sector have told us and how we are using this to influence HMPPS
  • What more can Clinks do to support the sector through the changes
  • Q&A session

This session will be recorded and shared on Clinks' website for anyone unable to attend.
