Personal Transitions Service (PTS): An asset based model

Tuesday, October 3, 2017

Mayday Trust's Paddy Bates writes on the Personal Transitions Service (PTS), the first strength based model for people experiencing homelessness.

Mayday Trust’s PTS is the first strength based model for people experiencing homelessness, and those going through the toughest of life transitions. PTS is about building strengths, aspirations, relationships and purpose, rather than focusing on needs and problems.

The aim is for people to transition out of homelessness and tough times in their lives quickly and positively, with a whole new community based network of support built around them, ready for the next bump in the road.

On 25 August 2017, Asset Coaches, delivering Mayday Trust’s PTS model all over the country, came together in Birmingham to meet, share experiences, and challenge both themselves and the system. Most did not know each other, and had not met before, but they bonded through their shared passion and values.

The Asset Coaches, and their managers, shared how their first few months of delivering this personalised, strengths and asset-based approach had gone. They then worked in groups to explore solutions to challenges they had encountered in delivering the model. The day ended in a healthy discussion on social activism and what it truly means to be a system-changer.

The feedback from this first ever UK Asset Coach Network event was very positive, with participants leaving challenged, empowered, reinvigorated and, most of all, connected to colleagues across the country.

Days such as these are essential to developing the model. The barriers and solutions discussed by frontline staff will directly influence the way the PTS model continues to develop and, as a result, how we as an organisation, and as a sector, continue to challenge and change the system within which we work.

PTS goes beyond a new service offer - it requires a totally different approach. A change of organisational culture where the power, dignity and respect for the individual is at the heart of every policy, recruitment, contact and conversation.

We are discussing asset based approaches on our Forum - join in the conversation there!
