Strengths-Based approaches to working with homeless couples

Being in a healthy loving relationship can be a great asset to anyone on their road to recovery from homelessness. This session will take time to explore ways of working with couple using a Strengths-Based approach and give you the opportunity to reflect upon your own practice with peers from across London.

Maintaining a relationship that bolsters wellbeing, provides support at the right time and enough personal autonomy to grow and change as needed can be a struggle for any one of us at the best of times. When a couple experiences homelessness this can bring a whole new set of challenges and dilemmas for them - and for those who support them.

For this Community of Practice we will focus on how we support people in relationships by examining our practice through a strengths-based lens:

  • How can we reframe relationships for homeless couples so that they can get the support they need and the best possible outcomes?
  • What in our practice needs to change for us to shift to a strengths-based approach to homeless couples?
  • Where are the gaps and opportunities for us to rethink our ways of working?

To commence we will also have input from Vicky Album the Homeless Link National Practice Project Manager leading on Homeless Link’s strengths-based practice work. You can read more here about the Strengths-Based approach.

Our guest speaker Jillian Thursby, the St Mungo’s Regional Head for South West London and the Women and Domestic Abuse Matrix Lead, will then guide us through some key points for consideration when supporting couples experiencing homelessness. Jill will draw her experience and upon the learning from the Homeless Couple’s Toolkit recently developed St Mungo’s. You are invited to view the toolkit in advance of this session.

The aim of this session is to provide you with some clear ideas, techniques and strategies for you to use in your practice and share with your team. We will also provide a space for you to reflect on what works within your service and learn from peers from across London’s Day Centres and affiliated homelessness services.

We facilitate events using a Solution Focused Practice approach so that problems are acknowledged but not dwelt on; instead, we look at building on existing resources and skills to work towards a shared, preferred future – as well as expanding knowledge where required. As this is an online event the format will vary however we will endeavour to leave you feeling positive, hopeful and better connected to the bigger picture.
