The Scottish Government plans to introduce new homelessness prevention duties as part of a forthcoming Housing Bill. The new duties will allow people to get help earlier – up to six months before they are at risk of homelessness – and require public bodies, such as schools and education, to ask about someone’s housing situation and then act to get them help if needed.

Households with children are more likely to identify unmet needs for support from housing, social work or health services as a factor in their homelessness, and households with children can remain in temporary accommodation for long periods of time, which can be damaging to all members of the household.

We also know that experience of homelessness at a young age increases the risk of homelessness later in life and that homelessness among young people in Scotland is more than twice the rate for older people. These factors highlight the urgency of preventing homelessness for young people.

At this homelessness prevention webinar we want to:

  • Share examples of existing practice & approaches when supporting children, families and young people
  • Learn more about new or innovative prevention practice in your area
  • Understand what changes are needed to enable earlier intervention and better joint-working practice in anticipation of new duties on public bodies to prevent homelessness

We would particularly like to hear from:

    • Housing First for Young People
    • Mediation and Support Services
    • Youth specific advice services and family community advice services
    • Social work staff & dedicated LA teams supporting families
    • School staff and outreach workers co-located in schools
    • Third sector organisations working with families and young people at risk of homelessness
